About The Position

To provide entry level G.I.S. and technical engineering assistance and recommendations to the City Engineer; Assistant City Engineer; other City Departments; and the General Public; to perform drafting, construction record keeping, and cartography; to provide technical review of plans, reports, and specifications; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to the area of assignment. This is the entry range journey level class in the G.I.S. / Engineering Technician series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the G.I.S. / Engineering Technician II by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned including the administration and maintenance of geographic information systems and data base management. Employees at this level receive instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled from the outside, having prior experience.

Requirements

  • The equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college-level course work in GIS, surveying, drafting and design, engineering, or a related field.
  • G.I.S. (Geographic Information Systems) computer software (ArcMap/ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online).
  • Basic mathematical principles.
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment, including mobile devices.
  • Operational characteristics of engineering equipment and tools.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • Digitized mapping formats and GIS administration.
  • Methods and techniques of mapping and cartography.
  • Operational characteristics of engineering equipment and tools.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Perform basic surveys and inspections and gather field data, update maps.
  • Reduce field data and produce design-ready drawings.
  • Operate a variety of computer equipment and software in a safe and effective manner.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Perform surveys and inspections, gather field data, update maps.
  • Operate a variety of survey, inspection, mapping, drafting, and general engineering equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Work collaboratively with various city departments.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years of increasingly responsible GIS and technical engineering experience, and/or the equivalent of an associate’s degree or professional certification in GIS, computer science, geography, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Update and maintain the geographic information system (GIS); perform data base management, data transfer and digital cartography; provide data and research for special projects as assigned.
  • Perform data input and maintenance on various GIS datasets.
  • Maintain and research a variety of records; provide copies of engineers' records as necessary.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of technical and analytical reports, correspondence, reference files and records.
  • Print copies of projects, maps, and reference materials for public and departmental use, revise project plans, maps, and geographic information systems.
  • Create online web maps and applications.
  • Work with office equipment such as printers, plotters and scanners and perform basic maintenance as needed.
  • Assist with surveys and construction inspections when necessary; gather field data.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
