About The Position

Vineyard City is one of Utah's fastest-growing communities, located along the shores of Utah Lake in the heart of Utah County. The City is seeking an experienced City Attorney to oversee all legal matters and provide trusted legal counsel in support of City operations, governance, and policy-making. As the City Attorney, you'll serve as both a strategic advisor and hands-on legal professional. This position oversees all legal activities of the City, including municipal law, employment law, contracts, litigation, land use, and risk management. You'll work closely with the City Manager, Mayor, City Council, and department leadership to provide clear, practical legal guidance. The ideal candidate will enjoy working in a collaborative environment, balancing legal risk with operational needs, and supporting a growing municipal organization.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active member in good standing with the Utah State Bar.
  • Eight (10) or more years of progressively responsible legal experience, preferably in municipal or public-sector law.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with land use, employment law, contracts, and government compliance preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as chief legal advisor to the City Manager, Mayor, City Council, City officials, staff, and boards and commissions.
  • Attend City Council meetings and other board and commission meetings to provide legal advice.
  • Draft, review, and approve ordinances, resolutions, contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.
  • Provide legal guidance on municipal operations, land use, zoning, employment law, and regulatory matters.
  • Represent the City in civil and criminal matters, hearings, and administrative proceedings.
  • Oversee and manage litigation, including coordination with outside counsel as needed.
  • Advise on employment-related matters, including grievances, claims, and compliance issues.
  • Oversee risk management and insurance matters in coordination with the Utah Local Governments Trust.
  • Supervise and manage the City Attorney's Office, including attorneys and support staff.
  • Assist in policy development to ensure legal compliance and best practices.
