About The Position

Be a mentor. Lead with camp spirit. Do you love coaching a staff of teens and young adults, building community, and creating joyful experiences for children? JCC Greater Boston is looking for a dynamic and engaging leader for our Counselors in Training program. The CIT Director is part of camp leadership, helping to ensuring the camp day runs smoothly to maximize fun while keeping everyone safe. They serve as the primary leader, mentor, and support system for our Counselors in Training, training and coaching them as they develop into future Camp Counselors. The CIT Director provides ongoing guidance to CITs, upholds camp policies and traditions, and models excellence in leadership. JCC Greater Boston offers free bus service for staff from Cambridge, Brookline, Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury, Wayland, Framingham, Natick, Needham, Newton and Wellesley during the summer season. Each day, you’ll be a visible, approachable leader for our Counselors in Training. You’ll mentor the CITs, support positive group dynamics, and step in to problem-solve when needed. You’ll model patience, professionalism, and camp spirit while helping create a safe, inclusive, and joyful experience for all. By summer’s end, you’ll know you’ve made a lasting impact on both campers and staff. At our camps, the best part of the day is simple: the campers. Requirements

  • High school degree required
  • 1+ season (summer camp, semester, other) experience teaching or program planning for children in a variety of settings
  • Safety awareness and ability to communicate any issues and concerns with supervisors
  • Exhibits leadership skills, including teamwork, patience, flexibility, and diplomacy
  • Demonstrates positive, collaborative attitude at all times
  • Self-starter who takes the initiative
  • Ability to manage situations effectively and diplomatically and ask for help, guidance, or clarification when needed
  • Must be able to work well with others, building/sustaining collaborative relationships
  • Able to work well in a busy, dynamic, and sometimes noisy environment involving multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Ability to work in variety of weather conditions for extended periods of time in case of rain, heat, humidity, cold, or other environmental factors to ensure the supervision and safety of campers in our care.
  • Able to lift and carry objects weighing 30-40 pounds (boxes of supplies, children’s backpacks, etc.
  • Able to sit and kneel; getting down at eye level with children regularly.

Nice To Haves

  • College degree, concentration or equivalent experience in Education or similar field of study and/or comparable experience preferred
  • Customer service experience preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted at the JCC’s discretion to meet minimum criteria.
  • Genuine enjoyment of working with children and helping them grow
  • Ability and commitment to build strong relationships with campers, parents, co-workers, and camp leadership

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, mentor, and support counselors and staff within assigned unit
  • Build strong relationships with campers, ensuring safety, inclusion, and positive group dynamics
  • Provide hands-on support for staff training and ongoing professional development throughout the summer
  • Mediate staff and camper conflicts with fairness and consistency, escalating issues to camp leadership when necessary while always keeping camp leadership informed
  • Partner with counselors to manage camper behavior and implement strategies for inclusion and support
  • Uphold and model camp policies, values, and culture through daily leadership
  • Communicate effectively with camp leadership, fellow unit heads, and families when appropriate
  • Facilitate logistics and camp operations, including attendance, safety procedures, and equipment/materials as needed
  • Serve as visible, approachable leader who fosters teamwork, joy, and professionalism among staff
  • Actively create a welcoming dynamic that contributes to an environment where each individual is valued and respected
  • Actively participate as an essential team member
  • Support JCC Greater Boston’s mission, vision, and values of belonging, joyfulness, collaboration, and transformation, including through role modeling
  • Enthusiastically representing the organization, model excellence and achievement
  • Attend JCCGB meetings and trainings as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned
