About The Position

The position involves teaching music appreciation, fundamentals, and various forms of music to elementary and secondary pupils. The educator will be responsible for planning and delivering a balanced music program, adapting instruction to meet individual student needs, and maintaining a productive learning environment. The role also includes evaluating student progress, organizing musical programs, and collaborating with other staff and parents to support student development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in music education (vocal or instrumentation).
  • Tuberculin skin test certifying freedom from contagious tuberculosis.
  • Eligible for or in possession of Virginia Teacher's Certificate/Licensure with appropriate endorsements.
  • In-depth knowledge of the subject(s) to be taught.
  • Considerable knowledge of effective teaching principles and methodologies.
  • Ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports.
  • Effective interaction skills with pupils, teachers, administrators, and classified employees.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the applied major and minor.

Responsibilities

  • Teach knowledge and skills in music appreciation, fundamentals, and explorations in music to elementary and secondary pupils.
  • Utilize approved courses of instruction for teaching music.
  • Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter as specified by state law and school district regulations.
  • Plan a balanced music program and organize daily class time for preparation, instruction, and rehearsal.
  • Provide individual or small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to student needs.
  • Use a repertoire of music literature appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils.
  • Control the storage and use of school-owned property and initiate repairs to instruments as needed.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior for a productive learning environment.
  • Evaluate each pupil's progress in growth and performance.
  • Plan, rehearse, and direct pupils in musical programs for the school and community.
  • Select and requisition music books, instruments, and instructional aids; maintain inventory records.
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service educational activities and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Identify pupils' needs and cooperate with other staff to address health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Communicate with parents and school personnel regarding pupil progress.
  • Cooperate with school administration to provide optimal musical instruction and opportunities.
  • Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom music activities during and outside the assigned work day.
