About The Position

As a Chilled Water Systems Tech I at the University of Iowa, you will support the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of chilled water production equipment that serves campus facilities. This role plays a critical part in maintaining reliable cooling systems that support academic buildings, research laboratories, and healthcare facilities. Daily work is primarily mechanical and hands on, focused on maintaining equipment reliability and plant performance. You will work alongside experienced operators and maintenance personnel to ensure equipment performance, system reliability, and safe plant operations. Our team operates and maintains the utility production and distribution systems that power the campus, with a strong focus on safety, reliability, sustainability, and continuous improvement. In this role, you will perform preventive maintenance and general mechanical repairs including air handler maintenance, filter and belt changes, greasing components, pump alignments, pump maintenance, bearing and oil changes, and other essential plant mechanical tasks Reporting to the Chilled Water Plant Supervisor, your roles and responsibilities include:

Requirements

  • A minimum of a High School Diploma or GED equivalent with any combination of education or experience involving machinery, equipment, and control systems related to a utility plant totaling a minimum of two (2) years of direct maintenance and repair experience
  • After six (6) months, demonstrate ability to determine when adjustments and repairs are necessary according to load requirements and or equipment problems
  • Ability to obtain Universal CFC certification within one (1) year of hire
  • After three (3) months, demonstrate the ability to operate the plant control system and building interface control system across first, second, and third shifts
  • Ability to perform mathematical computations
  • This role requires attendance at a worksite on a daily basis
  • Ability to meet highest attendance requirements and willingness to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays as required
  • Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license with a clean driving record; operation of company owned vehicles is required
  • Ability to communicate effectively, written, verbally, and digitally using a company provided computer working with standard software applications (MS Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Must be physically capable to hear and understand audible alarms, detect changes in noise levels of rotating equipment and portable radio communication
  • Capable of frequently standing, walking, balancing, sitting, climbing (ladders, stairs, ramps, catwalks, and the like as required), kneeling, pushing, pulling, and capable of lifting up to 75lbs
  • Capable of performing repetitive motions as required
  • Must be physically capable of entering and working in a confined space (crawl spaces, shafts, small enclosed areas, pipes and the like) as required
  • Must be physically capable of wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to half and full-face respirators, fall protection equipment, hardhat, safety shoes, safety glasses, hearing protection, etc.
  • This position consists of 35% of outdoor work, while performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions
  • Must be willing and able to comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies

Responsibilities

  • Assist with Operating, and maintaining turbines, centrifugal chillers, pumps, electric motors, tower fans, and related equipment
  • Assists in the installation and repair of pressure piping for compressed air, water, steam, domestic water, condenser water, chilled water, and condensate
  • Assist with the general maintenance of equipment such as chiller tube bundles, heat exchangers, tower fans, gearboxes, driveshafts, pumps, valves, air compressors, and all other plant related equipment.
  • Utilize hoisting and rigging tools to move heavy equipment as necessary
  • Assist in troubleshooting and repairing electrical and pneumatic control systems
  • Use proper techniques while using power and hand tools
  • Carries out other duties as assigned
