About The Position

The Children's Librarian at The New York Public Library (NYPL) is responsible for fostering a love of reading and learning among children in the community. This role involves providing reference services, developing and promoting innovative programs, and maintaining a diverse children's collection. The librarian will engage with children through various activities, collaborate with community organizations, and ensure a welcoming and resource-rich environment for young patrons.

Requirements

  • ALA accredited Master's degree in Library and Information Studies.
  • Public Librarian's Professional Certificate issued by the State of New York.
  • Strong commitment to public service and ability to work well with a diverse patronage.
  • Experience creating and conducting innovative programs for children.
  • Knowledge of children's literature and experience maintaining a children's collection.
  • Experience building partnerships with local organizations.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Strong organization and planning skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google applications.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of emerging library technologies and programming trends for children in urban public libraries.
  • Spanish proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Provides reference service and resource recommendations using print, media, and digital resources.
  • Collaborates with the Educational Services Department to develop, promote, facilitate, present, and evaluate innovative programs for children.
  • Partners with the collection development team to build and maintain a diverse and relevant Children's collection.
  • Engages children with the collection to help them discover their interests.
  • Conducts outreach to community organizations and local businesses to promote library services and programs for children.
  • Encourages digital literacy and provides technology instruction.
  • Develops and maintains the layout and appearance of the children's space in the library.
  • Creates content for social media platforms to promote library programs and services.
  • Mentors library staff in preparing and presenting children's programs.
  • Assists with circulation, fines & fees management, and opening/closing procedures.
  • May take responsibility for the facility, staff, and operations in the absence of the Library Manager.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends in children's literature and services through professional development activities.
