About The Position

The Gallatin Public Library of Sumner County is seeking a dynamic, sociable, and community-focused Children's Services Librarian. This full-time position is responsible for planning and delivering engaging library services, programs, and collections for children and their families. Reporting to the Library Director, the Children's Librarian plays a vital role in promoting creativity, literacy, and community connection.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with children in a library or educational setting
  • Valid Tennessee Driver's License required
  • Familiarity with standard library equipment including computers, printers, scanners, and phones

  • Masters in Library Science (MLS) preferred

Responsibilities

  • Create, plan, organize, promote, and present a wide variety of age-appropriate programs and events for children and families, both in-person and off-site.
  • Coordinate and implement the annual Summer Reading Program, including budgeting, performer scheduling, reward tracking, and event promotion.
  • Develop and maintain a diverse and relevant children's collection of print, digital, and visual materials. Creatively market and display materials; evaluate, weed, and make purchasing recommendations as needed.
  • Oversee daily operations of the Children's Department, ensuring a clean, organized, and welcoming space.
  • Provide excellent customer service by assisting children and caregivers with locating materials, using resources, and developing information literacy skills.
  • Represent the library in a professional, unbiased, and positive manner; maintain a welcoming attitude and refrain from sharing personal beliefs.
  • Build and maintain cooperative relationships with library staff, patrons, local schools, educators, and child-serving organizations.
  • Maintain accurate program and department usage statistics.
  • Stay current on trends in children's services by attending relevant conferences, trainings, and webinars.
  • Maintain confidentiality and respect the privacy of patrons and coworkers.
  • Adhere to and help enforce all library and county policies and procedures.
  • Prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently, and meet established deadlines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support daily library operations, including circulation or reference desk duties, opening/closing procedures, and physically demanding tasks such as bending, lifting up to 25 pounds, and occasional outdoor programming.
