About The Position

Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates child life services to meet the therapeutic, educational and/or diversional needs of the patient, facilitating adjustment to illness, disability, hospitalization, painful procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in Child Life, Early Childhood Education or related field
  • Completion of Child Life internship
  • Child Life Certification or eligible. If not certified at hire, expectation to take and pass certification examination within one year of hire
  • American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Provider Certification
  • Driver's License
  • Work or volunteer experience with children with special needs
  • Physical stamina to lift, maneuver patients and equipment
  • Therapeutic handling of patients
  • Cognitive ability to evaluate patients and complete documentation
  • Ability to drive hospital vehicles
  • Ability to plan activities and adapt to the environment to suit a variety of diagnoses
  • Tact, enthusiasm, initiative and professional judgment in performance of duties
  • Ability to manage time efficiently and effectively
  • Good communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Completes all documentation on time according to hospital and department policies
  • Develops, coordinates and implements appropriate programming for a variety of age and diagnostic groups, matching developmental level, interests and emotional state
  • Assesses, plans and implements individual treatment plans related to illness|disability, social-emotional development, play preference|style, coping skills and family dynamics according to standards of practice
  • Conducts individual sessions, team treats, procedural support and patient family teaching in a developmentally and culturally appropriate manner
  • Actively supports principles of pain management
  • Evaluates Child Life services and makes recommendations to improve patient and program outcomes
  • Treatment plan reflects collaboration and communication with patient, family and team. Discharge planning involves school re-integration services when appropriate
  • Coordinates special events on a rotating basis throughout the year
  • Assist with personal, department and hospital growth and development through involvement in research, professional organizations and presentations to promote best practice and maintain certification
  • Supervises and|or assists with student interns as designated
  • Effectively utilizes and supervises volunteers and visiting groups
  • May provide direction to students and volunteers
