Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree in Child Life, Child Development, Family Studies or related field required.
  • Certification in Child Life or eligible to be certified in Child Life required.
  • BLS (American Heart Assoc) required.
  • Completion of a 480-hour internship program.
  • Less than two (2) years experience as a Child Life Specialist.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the emotional, psychosocial, educational, recreational, and therapeutic needs of patients and families.
  • Provide patient and family education, procedural support, psychosocially supportive interventions, and play activities based on assessments.
  • Serve as a liaison between parents and professionals for the Child Life Department.
  • Collaborate with the physician and healthcare team in the delivery of patient care.
  • Deliver child life services at a beginner level according to the Child Life skills inventory.
  • Assist patients and families in coping with the stress of hospitalization, illness, death and/or loss.
  • Participate in patient/family teaching using developmentally appropriate and medically accurate teaching aids.
  • Prepare patients and families for medical and surgical procedures or visitation to pediatric or adult ICUs.
  • Provide supervision to child life volunteers.
  • Ensure safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adhere to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Promote individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education.
  • Serve as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
  • Demonstrate commitment to caring for every member of our community by creating compassionate and personalized experiences.
