About The Position

Gain knowledge and training during the 600 hour Child Life Internship Program in order to plan, organize, and implement Child Life programming in the hospital while under the supervision of a certified Child Life Specialist. The child life intern will be responsible for providing a wide range of developmentally appropriate services designed to promote optimum development of children and adolescents, reduce stress, and maximize positive coping. Is able to provide Child Life services in all areas covered by the Child Life Department. Operates within the hospital mission, vision, and values.

Requirements

  • Completion of Bachelor's degree, or working toward completion of a Bachelor’s degree, in child life, education, child development, psychology, or a related field.
  • In-depth knowledge of child development and experience working with children is necessary

  • completion of a child life practicum is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assists in maintaining the Child Life playroom, providing a therapeutic and safe environment for individuals and groups.
  • Assists patients in coping with the stress of hospitalization, illness, death and/or loss.
  • Assesses and interacts with patients and families using theories of human growth and development, family systems, and cultural background.
  • Upon completion of preparation learning protocol, will prepare patients for surgical and diagnostic procedures.
  • Upon completion of procedural support learning protocol, will provide support and facilitate optimal coping skills for patients during treatments and procedures.
  • Documents child life interventions in the patient chart under the child life specialist’s supervision.
  • Provides group and individual activities for hospitalized patients.
  • Assists in supervising volunteers.
  • Assists with planning and implementing of special events.
  • Communicates observations and information to appropriate personnel.
  • Functions as a member of the healthcare team.
  • Assists in inventory control and storage of supplies.
  • Collaborates with Child Life Specialists to develop, implement, and evaluate plans
  • Provides and maintains age-appropriate supplies in accordance with hospital safety and infection control policies, including daily disinfecting of Child Life equipment and areas.
  • Attends hospital and department meetings as required.
  • Participates in process improvement, teams, and departmental QA.
