About The Position

The New York State Education Department's (NYSED) Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for a Child Care Aide 1 (Substitute) position at the New York State School for the Deaf (NYSSD). This is a temporary, on-call, hourly position where duties include maintaining the safety and well-being of students, utilizing a total communication approach to language development, attending to students' personal hygiene needs, assisting during mealtimes, and preventing child abuse and maltreatment by attending all staff training and reporting concerns as required.

Requirements

• Candidates must be able to read, write and speak English.
• Candidates must follow written and spoken instructions.
• Candidates must be in good health and good physical condition.

Nice To Haves

• Experience working with deaf students.
• Ability to communicate through ASL/Sign Language.

Responsibilities

• Maintain the safety and well-being of students by escorting them to and from meals, monitoring exits during emergencies, and supervising students in various areas.
• Utilize a total communication approach to language development with deaf or hard of hearing individuals.
• Check that each student has their hearing aid, cochlear implant, and/or glasses daily.
• Attend to students' personal hygiene needs and assist in developing appropriate daily living skills.
• Supervise students during mealtimes and encourage balanced eating in a relaxed atmosphere.
• Attend all staff training to prevent child abuse and maltreatment and report any concerns to supervisors.
