About The Position

The Child and Youth Program Assistant (Technician Level) position at the Department of the Air Force involves mentoring and supporting child and youth staff at the Youth Center on Travis Air Force Base, CA. The role includes providing training, supervising children and youth, planning activities, and ensuring compliance with policies and standards. This position is permanent and offers flexible working hours without guaranteed hours, allowing for up to 40 hours per week.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Pass a physical examination and have required immunizations.
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs or more and stand for long periods of time.
  • Obtain a Food Handler's Certification.
  • Satisfactorily complete installation, state, and national criminal background checks.
  • Possess maturity and good judgment and enjoy working with children/youth and their parents.
  • 24 months of experience working in a childcare or youth program, or completion of DoD approved competency training courses.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a Child Development Associate credential or equivalent.
  • Experience working with children aged 6 weeks to 5 years.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a mentor for assigned child and youth staff.
  • Assist in providing instruction and training to lower-level employees.
  • Model appropriate behaviors and techniques for working with children and youth.
  • Record observations and chart progress of team members' on-the-job skills.
  • Consult with trainers on strategies to assist team members' professional development efforts.
  • Supervise children and youth during daily activities and special events.
  • Plan and conduct activities based on observed needs of individual children and youth.
  • Prepare and implement program options for children and youth with special requirements.
  • Encourage participant interest and establish a positive program setting.
  • Review activities and plans for appropriateness and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Interact with children and youth using approved child guidance techniques.
  • Ensure children and youth depart with authorized persons according to parental instructions.
  • Plan and conduct parent involvement activities.
  • Observe program participants for signs of illness, abuse, or neglect and report as directed.
  • Inventory equipment and recommend replenishing supplies as needed.
