About The Position

NICTD intends to hire a railroad Chief Transportation Officer headquartered in Michigan City, Indiana. The Chief Transportation Officer is responsible for all operational issues within the South Shore Line’s service territory (including the Metra Electric Division). To be considered for this position, the person must have five (5) or more years supervisory or combined supervisory and operational experience in railroad service. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual with experience commuter railroads to use his or her skills in leadership, teamwork, communication, and practical thought to resolve service delivery challenges, improve productivity, and help deliver safe high-quality service to our customers.

Requirements

  • Five (5) or more years of supervisory or combined supervisory and operating experience in railroad operations.
  • Familiarity with commuter, passenger, NICTD, and/or Metra Electric commuter operations is preferred but not required
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal skills and ability to work with the public, employees and other departments within NICTD
  • Strong leadership, decision-making, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record
  • Basic or better proficiency in Microsoft Office products
  • Information in NICTD personnel and attendance files may be considered as a factor in the final selection decision.
  • Selection is also subject to satisfactory results from a physical examination (including drug and alcohol screening tests) and background evaluation (including criminal and trust-related criteria).

  • Familiarity with commuter, passenger, NICTD, and/or Metra Electric commuter operations is preferred but not required

Responsibilities

  • Direct, manage, and coordinate daily rail activities to ensure safe, efficient and effective train operations
  • Administer and enforce departmental safety programs, operating rules, and regulatory compliance
  • Develop operating procedures, standards, and performance metrics (KPMs) to improve safety and reliability
  • Supervise transportation personnel and oversee scheduling.
  • Coordinate activities with other departments, outside agencies, and contractors to ensure smooth service
  • Deep understanding of rail transportation operations, safety regulations, and labor contracts
  • Other projects and duties as assigned
