About The Position

Glacier Fish Company is dedicated to producing the highest quality frozen-at-sea groundfish products in the world. We accomplish our mission with a day-in-and-day-out commitment to quality, safety, consistent attention to detail and an on-going concern for the stability and health of the North Pacific fishery resource. We are one of the largest producers of frozen at sea cod and pollock, and distributes seafood throughout the world. We manage two trawl catcher-processor vessels that operate in the Bering Sea and off the coast of Washington and Oregon. Come join us with one of the many exciting job opportunities available! Chief Steward works aboard an at-sea processing vessel of the coast of Alaska in the Bering Sea, Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Alaska and Aleutian Islands. Responsible for safe and efficient management of Galley to include the daily administrative and operational tasks, including financial management and analysis, sanitation, safety, all meals, maintenance of ship accommodations, training and supervision of galley staff. This position oversees a staff of two that prepare meals, clean and maintain a 200 foot vessel with 40 crewmembers, that works on a 24/7 schedule. The Chief Steward will prepare 2 meals per day and oversee the Assistant Cook and Galley Helper in the preparation of other daily meals.

Requirements

  • All candidates subject to a post offer pre-employment drug test, medical and background screen.
  • Culinary certification or degree preferred
  • 3+ years’ of experience as a Cook on a fishing vessel or cruise ship preferred
  • Highly proficient in baking, cooking along with preparing recipes for 50+ groups.
  • Basic understanding of the various laws and regulations and how/when they may apply.
  • Basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and percentages.
  • Excellent communication skills; written and spoken English.
  • Experience in hospitality on cruise ship or hotel preferred.
  • Needs to be a strong manager to direct Assistant Cook & Galley Helper and hold them to comprehensive daily task list. To include deep cleaning of entire vessel, laundry, dining room cleanliness, and more.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, motivates, trains, develops and directs 2 team members to deliver delicious, nutritious food
  • Responsible for cleanliness of the vessel including common areas, state rooms, and crew laundry.
  • Prepares well balanced meals to fuel crew members working in a physically demanding field through the day.
  • Prepare regular inventory reports for the Operations and Accounting departments.
  • Maintain cost controls as stipulated by GFC/NSF Operations. Track total food cost, voyage days and food cost per crew, per day.
  • Ensure all common areas, staterooms, toilets and other areas including hallways are cleaned and maintained to satisfaction of the vessel Captain.
  • Provide GFC/NSF Port Engineer and vessel Chief Engineer a work list for all maintenance/repair needs on a trip by trip basis during fishing and at end seasons.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable sections of the Safety Management System. Knowledgeable and conversant on applicable policies and procedures contained in the SMS.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental and company regulations regarding general and food waste.
  • Maintain safety and sanitation standards in compliance with ADEC standards.

  • Company travel policy agreement: Successful completion of 5 consecutive fishing trips grants eligibility for airfare/hotel expenses, between the vessel and Seattle, to be paid by the company. Each fishing trip averages 12-18 days and can be more or less dependent on fishing conditions.
