About The Position

Lead the Future of Laboratory Science Interpath Laboratory is seeking a visionary Chief Science Officer to provide enterprise-wide scientific leadership and drive innovation across all testing departments. This executive role serves as the organization’s senior scientific authority, advancing analytical excellence while leading responsible adoption of artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, laboratory automation, and emerging digital technologies. The CSO ensures scientific innovation aligns with financial stewardship, regulatory compliance, operational integrity, and high standards of patient care. You will be joining our leadership team at Interpath's Headquarters in Pendleton, OR. Interpath prides itself on being change agents, willing to take calculated risks for "monumental" changes in the cost and delivery of healthcare. Performing over 2.7 million tests each month, this family owned and operated clinical and anatomic pathology laboratory has grown to become the largest, independent laboratory in the Northwest. This growth is embodied by dedicated individuals instilling a culture of operational excellence, accountability, and innovation - driving us to make a lasting impact on people's lives. As the Chief Science Officer you will guide laboratory science strategy across the organization — evaluating, validating, and operationalizing new technologies into scalable, clinically meaningful applications. This leader partners closely with executive leadership, laboratory management, sales, and clients to expand service offerings, strengthen scientific capability, and position Interpath at the forefront of laboratory innovation.

Requirements

  • PhD in a laboratory science required
  • Demonstrated leadership implementing AI, advanced analytics, or automation in a clinical laboratory
  • Extensive experience across multiple laboratory disciplines
  • Proven success implementing new technologies and leading validation studies
  • Experience collaborating with executive leadership on strategic growth initiatives
  • Strong financial and operational evaluation experience
  • ASCP certification required

Nice To Haves

  • MS or BS considered with substantial progressive leadership and innovation experience

Responsibilities

  • Scientific Leadership & Consultation Provide enterprise-wide scientific direction across all testing disciplines
  • Serve as the senior authority on methodology, validation standards, and clinical interpretation
  • Offer high-level consultation to physicians, clients, technical leadership, and executive management
  • Support accreditation and regulatory compliance through scientific oversight
  • Innovation & Technology Strategy Lead AI, advanced analytics, and laboratory automation initiatives
  • Evaluate, validate, and implement new instrumentation, assays, and methodologies
  • Ensure rigorous validation and regulatory compliance for new technologies
  • Translate emerging digital tools into operational, clinically relevant solutions
  • Scientific Quality & Financial Stewardship Evaluate analytical performance, clinical relevance, and testing trends
  • Monitor productivity, test utilization, and reference laboratory spend
  • Identify strategic insourcing opportunities
  • Develop ROI and financial impact analyses for new scientific initiatives
  • Strategic Growth & Collaboration Partner with executive leadership and Sales to develop new testing services
  • Review technical marketing materials for scientific accuracy
  • Collaborate with laboratory operations to implement new technologies and support inspection readiness
