Chief Probation/Parole Officer- JD17 Surry County

State of North CarolinaDurham, NC
Onsite

About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees, responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation, as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff, as well as probation/parole officers who supervise sentenced people in the community. The Chief Probation/Parole Officer (CPPO) supervises Probation/Parole Officers, Judicial Services Coordinators, and clerical staff within their unit. The CPPO coordinates and manages the unit’s workflow to ensure the effective implementation of Community Supervision goals and strategies. This role involves handling daily operations and making decisions about offender supervision, including case assignments, workflow coordination, scheduling, time tracking, and staff training. The CPPO also addresses discipline, conflicts, and complaints, and oversees team staffing and employee performance. The offender population includes individuals sentenced by the Court or ordered by the Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission, ranging from high-risk to low-risk, many requiring careful supervision, reentry planning, and tailored case management. The job emphasizes significant role modeling, coaching, reinforcement of pro-social behaviors, and teaching pro-social and decision-making skills to staff, ensuring employees are skilled and fostering their professional growth. The CPPO is responsible for staff accountability regarding workload and case management, and must effectively plan and direct tasks to meet deadlines. The CPPO frequently engages in crisis interventions and meets with stakeholders, requiring a flexible schedule that includes regular 8-5 hours and 24/7 availability for emergency calls. The CPPO must quickly analyze crisis situations and provide immediate responses, often developing and carrying out specialized control strategies independently. The CPPO may also handle an active caseload with possible second-shift hours and/or serve on an EHA response team, which includes on-call status and responding to EHA violations.
