About The Position

The Florida State Guard serves Florida as a cornerstone of statewide crisis and emergency response. The mission of the Florida State Guard is to protect and preserve the life and property of the people of Florida from all threats to public safety through rapid deployment of ground, maritime, and air capabilities in partnership with state and local agencies. The Florida State Guard is a Division of the Florida Department of Military Affairs.

Requirements

  • Federal Aviation Administration certifications awarded from accredited civilian aviation programs OR must have aviation certifications from accredited military aviation schools:
  • Commercial Pilot
  • Multi-Engine Airplane
  • Multi-Engine Helicopter
  • Notes military equivalent for a specific airframe may be substituted.
  • Two years’ experience in instructing others in a specific airframe/military aircraft
  • In excess of 50 hours NVG, any airframe
  • Must be an FAA-certified flight instructor, or ability to obtain within 3-6 months of hire date
  • In excess of 3000 hours of fixed-wing and 3000 hours of rotary-wing aircraft flight time
  • Ability to obtain a FAA ATP within one year of employment.
  • UH-60 Blackhawk Qualified

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with civilian aviation programs or military service aviation programs (active duty or reserve components)
  • Experience piloting and pilot skills in one or more of the following main-frame/military aircraft: Fixed-wing, rotary, or remotely piloted aircraft (RPA).
  • Ability to train and instruct others in the piloting of a main-frame FSG aircraft (crewed and uncrewed).
  • Experience with mission tasking, intelligence reporting, and applying weather information.
  • Experience supervising and/or filing of flight plans and conducting crew briefings.
  • Experience with aircraft preflight inspections, aircraft loading, equipment assessments, and mission manning.
  • Experience operating aircraft controls and equipment.
  • Experience performing or supervising the work procedures involved in navigation, “hot” and cold refueling; search and rescue operations; or surveillance and reconnaissance.
  • Ability to conduct or supervise the training of crew members in simple to complex mission specific tasks.
  • Experience developing plans and policies, monitoring operations, and advising commanders.
  • Experience with flight theory, air navigation, meteorology, flying directives, aircraft operating procedures, and mission tactics.
  • Qualified to instruct others to pilot aircraft on a regular and recurring basis.
  • Experience with the aviation unit quality control management programs; plus, skilled in the unit flying, explosive, and ground safety programs in accordance with Federal, state, and local guidelines.
  • Experience following directives, regulations, accident reports, safety data, and local operating conditions to help determine unit safety program requirements.
  • Experience coordinating with appropriate agencies to ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations and programs.
  • Experience with one or more missions such as, air-to- ground; surveillance; reconnaissance; MEDEVAC; target tracking; or laser targeting.
  • Experience with manned or unmanned aircraft.
  • Experience with on-board aircraft instrumentation and aircraft mounted video cameras.
  • Experience with visual flight-rule type flying and aircraft instrument flying.
  • Experience planning, scheduling, and conducting flights through Federal Aviation Administration controlled national airspace (NAS).
  • Experience applying operational directives, training directives, instructions, standard operating procedures, and special instructions of the FSG and gaining organizations/commands.
  • Experience working independently to plan and perform work assignments.
  • Experience completing safe and efficient missions using Operational Risk Management.
  • Experience cancelling flying activities, diverting aircraft, dictating mission requirements, approving specific activities, coordinating for airport or airspace utilization with FAA, and/or directing emergency actions involving unit support agencies.
  • Experience using applicable FAA regulations, policies, requirements and standards, skills and practices; and applying instructional techniques to the training of other pilots
  • Experience conducting surveillance tactics, missions, or specific main-frame aircraft; or flying in various types of terrain, performing tactical remote site evaluation, performing landings on remote sites, providing ground and flight training, and conducting night-vision operations and instruction.
  • Experience overseeing standardization and evaluation programs, written ground examinations, emergency procedures, and aircrew performance standards in accordance with applicable directives and Federal Aviation Administration certification requirements.
  • Experience reviewing and complying with applicable service flight publications and directives for accuracy and currency, and knowledgeable of weapons and tactics for applicable military aircraft.
  • Experience maintaining detailed Emergency and non-emergency plans and supplements for unit mobility, deployment, away from home station field operations/ employment, and redeployment.
  • Ability to travel to various locations for project execution
  • Ability to work in challenging environmental conditions

Responsibilities

  • Manage, oversee, communicate with, motivate, train, evaluate, plan, and direct the work of two rotary-wing pilots and one fixed-wing pilot. Incumbent has the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline subordinate members or effectively recommend such action.
  • Plan and assist FSG leadership to direct department in the use of aircraft.
  • Recommend and assist in developing policies and guidelines in all phases of flight operations for State-owned and contracted aircraft, to include flight standards and training programs.
  • Ensure that all pilots who fly department aircraft comply with minimum training and proficiency requirements.
  • Assist in the acquisition of aircraft, to include monitoring, evaluating, and making recommendations for improving aircraft equipment, safety equipment, and the air program relative to flight operations.
  • Act as relief and primary pilot of State-owned and contracted aircraft in the performance of all FSG aviation missions, as needed.
