About The Position

Position Purpose: Is in direct responsible charge of assigned shift. Responsible for directing the activities of that shift to ensure compliance with applicable regulations. Provides day-to-day monitoring/operations of equipment, routine sampling, laboratory analysis and minor maintenance activities and uses experience to optimize plant performance.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED is required.
  • Requires working knowledge of the methods, techniques, principles and practices of water/wastewater treatment, as acquired through five (5) years of experience.
  • Must demonstrate a working ability to use computer programs for process controls and reporting.
  • Requires ability to diagnose plant-wide process problems and take remedial action, and to troubleshoot equipment.
  • Requires good reading, math, writing, scientific and verbal communication skills; a scientific and mechanical aptitude; and the ability to read, interpret, and record data from meters, gauges, scales panels, computer consoles and other equipment.
  • Requires ability to plan, organize, train, and functionally supervise subordinates.
  • Must have the ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Requires the ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Most possess professional integrity and confidentiality regarding company business and have the ability to work well and communicate with clients, upper management and the general public; and to establish effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Massachusetts Grade 6C Full Operators Certification (minimum).
  • Requires highest level water/wastewater treatment plant operator’s licenses as required by the site or ability to acquire within one year of appointment to Operator III.
  • Must have and maintain valid driver’s license and operator’s license with a safe driving record.
  • Ability to perform tasks standing (25%) and walking (75%) for as many as five miles per shift.
  • Work positions include climbing stairs (60%), squatting and working with hands extended above head eighteen (18) inches (25%) and thirty (30) inches in front of body (10%).
  • Must be able to lift and carry seventy-five (75) pounds in standing or bending positions, and carry while walking distances of ten (10) feet.

Responsibilities

  • Operates equipment manually and through instrument panels, computer terminals and programmable logic control units.
  • Performs field tests (chemical, physical and biological) in order to pace chemical dosages for process and odor control units or to alter unit processes.
  • Monitors and observes operating conditions, and records observation and data; diagnoses technical operational problems and takes corrective action; and communicates status, changes and abnormalities in operating areas.
  • Assists in the development of process control and standard operating procedures; verifies and reports on corrective action taken against malfunctions, and variances abnormal operations conditions.
  • Prepares chemical solutions, and monitors process chemical supplies and recommends reorder.
  • Samples wastewater, sludge and gases according to schedule, and services automatic samplers.
  • Performs routing lab tests and routine instrument calibration for portable meters.
  • Performs minor maintenance including routine preventative maintenance, lubrication and minor adjustments; performs basic troubleshooting of equipment, recommends solutions and, where appropriate, fills out maintenance requests.
  • Operates vehicles for plant operational purposes.
  • Provides on-the-job training for Operator I and Grade Operator positions in operations, maintenance and safety duties as required.
  • Assures work is performed in a safe and professional manner by following established safety, operating and emergency response procedures.
  • Performs cleanup and housekeeping tasks for work areas, tools, equipment, facilities and grounds.
  • Determines and directs remedial action in event of an emergency.
  • Performs other related duties as needed.
