The Team You’ll Work With: The Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants (MOPT), within the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Housing and Planning, advances policies and programs to strengthen tenant protections, promote housing stability, and ensure equitable access to safe and affordable housing for all New Yorkers. The Office works across City agencies as well as with community-based organizations, advocates, and the private sector to implement the City’s housing agenda. The Deputy Mayor for Housing and Planning oversees key housing, land use, and planning agencies and initiatives, coordinating interagency efforts to preserve affordability, prevent displacement, and address the citywide housing crisis. The Problems You’ll Solve: The Chief of Staff oversees MOPT’s staff hiring processes, organizational structure, and day-to-day operations. In close collaboration with the Executive Director, the Chief of Staff will lead initiatives and projects, help coordinate external engagements, and establish systems to track, evaluate, and communicate about MOPT’s work.

Requirements

  • You can navigate complex bureaucracies and steer projects towards completion within them.
  • You have proven experience building new teams and programs; experience managing large groups and budgets.
  • You have familiarity with the history of tenant protection work in New York City, a strong existing understanding of and relationships with relevant parties across the City and State government.
  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to synthesize complex information.
  • You have experience managing projects involving multiple stakeholders and agencies.
  • You can work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in housing policy, government, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Lead hiring new MOPT staff, develop onboarding processes.
  • Map out team and reporting structures, support managers.
  • Identify skill and experience gaps across the MOPT team, work to train or hire to fill them.
  • Serve as liaison to City Hall Press and Communications teams, The Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City, City Council, Office of Management and Budget, Facilities, and Human Resources.
  • Oversee MOPT's finance and budget operations.
  • Lead internal meetings with staff; oversee and manage highly prioritized special projects; implement internal systems to ensure streamlined processes in MOPT; and support and assist staff.
  • Help prepare the Executive Director for external engagements, including briefing materials and coordinating with Comms on messaging.
  • Coordinate with City agencies, external partners, and community stakeholders to advance policy initiatives.
  • Review presentations, memos, and reports for internal and external audiences.
  • Filter incoming needs and requests for the Executive Director.
  • Inform high-level decision-making, project, and initiative development.
  • Ensure that the organization’s priorities are clear and executed effectively.
  • Track key initiatives and ensure accountability.
  • Identify bottlenecks to push projects forward.
  • Serve as a liaison between MOPT, City agencies, tenant advocates, and community-based organizations, and coordinate efforts with other DMHP staff.
  • Develop project plans, timelines, and deliverables; track progress and troubleshoot challenges.
  • Act as a bridge between strategy and day-to-day operations.
