Under limited direction, the Chief of Staff to the Mayor supports the Mayor by planning, directing, coordinating, and evaluating the overall operation of the Mayor's Office, performs a variety of advanced professional duties and analytical projects for the Mayor; relieves the Mayor of administrative detail; acts as a liaison to City Council members; responds to constituent inquiries; attends and represents the Mayor at governmental, community group, school, and service club meetings; and assumes responsibility for the office in the absence of the Mayor. This is a single position classification. The Chief of Staff to the Mayor refers only difficult, unusual or highly sensitive or confidential matters to the Mayor. This classification is reserved for the Mayor, and the incumbent often maintains a high public profile and acts as a conduit and filter for information that can be sensitive. The incumbent is the initial contact and liaison for the constituency.
