About The Position

The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is a senior executive leader responsible for the strategic direction, operational performance, and overall excellence of nursing services across the organization. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer and working in alignment with system-level nursing leadership, this role ensures high standards in patient care, regulatory compliance, workforce engagement, and operational efficiency. This position requires an experienced healthcare leader with prior CNO experience, a strong background in complex hospital environments, and a demonstrated ability to lead large-scale clinical and organizational transformation initiatives.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Nursing Administration or a related field
  • Minimum 8 years of nursing experience
  • At least 6 years in nursing leadership or management roles
  • Prior experience as a Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) required
  • Minimum 6+ years of leadership experience in large or complex hospital systems
  • Proven success in achieving or maintaining Magnet designation
  • Strong background in organizational change management
  • Experience working in unionized healthcare environments
  • Demonstrated strategic planning and execution skills
  • Active New York State RN license OR eligibility/pending licensure
  • No relocation assistance available
  • Strong executive presence with the ability to influence senior stakeholders
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and decision-making skills

Responsibilities

  • Provide executive oversight of all nursing operations to ensure safe, high-quality, and cost-effective patient care
  • Develop and execute strategic nursing initiatives aligned with organizational objectives
  • Lead performance improvement efforts and monitor clinical, operational, and financial outcomes
  • Promote evidence-based practices and a culture of continuous improvement
  • Collaborate with executive leadership, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure integrated care delivery
  • Oversee workforce planning, recruitment, retention, and professional development of nursing staff
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory and accreditation standards
  • Foster strong labor-management relationships in a unionized environment
  • Manage departmental budgets, capital planning, and resource allocation
  • Drive patient experience initiatives and staff engagement strategies
