The Chief Nurse Anesthetist works under limited supervision of the Department Chair and Vice Chair of Anesthesiology and Pain Management to supervise CRNAs and support staff and provide professional nursing service administering anesthesia to surgery patients.

Requirements

  • Graduate of accredited school of nursing and graduate of school of nurse anesthesia accredited by the AANA.
  • 5 years of experience as a Certified Registered Nurse in a major medical center or major trauma receiving hospital.
  • (RN) REGISTERED NURSE licensed by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas.
  • (APRN) Advanced Practice RN licensed by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas.
  • (CRNA) CERT REG NURSE ANESTHETIST certified by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas.
  • (BLS) BASIC LIFE SUPPORT accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • (ACLS) ADV CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA).

Responsibilities

  • Supervises CRNAs and support staff at various sites of service in safe and efficient delivery of anesthesia and related services. Will handle employee relations issues (e.g., excessive tardies/absences, scheduling conflicts, etc.).
  • Assists in the selection, training, motivation, and evaluation of assigned staff to ensure maximum utilization of individual and group capabilities, while providing optimal service to both internal and external customers.
  • Communicates with Division Director regarding CRNA recruitment, work environment, disciplinary action and patient complaints.
  • Prepares work schedules for CRNAs, approves VSL requests, and submits hourly time sheets for PRNs and CRNAs.
  • Ensures CRNA staff meets CRNA educational requirements, and are credentialed and recertified as required.
  • Prepares and administers anesthetic agents to patients in order to desensitize them to permit performance of medical or surgical procedures.
  • Performs pre-anesthesia evaluation of patient in order to ascertain physiological and psychological factors which influence selection of anesthetic agent and formulation of plan of anesthetic management.
  • Monitors patient in operating room in order to maintain patient in homeostatic condition and to ensure unnecessary injuries are not inflicted on patient.
  • Records anesthetic information on anesthesia chart to provide permanent record necessary for care of patient, material for teaching and studies, and to establish medical-legal record.
  • Provides clinical guidance to medical students and SRNAs in order to contribute to their clinical training.
  • Serves on appropriate institutional committees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
