About The Position

The Mate is a deck officer responsible for navigating, overseeing the deck crew, maintaining safety, and assisting the Captain during various ship operations. The First Mate (Chief Mate) is responsible for all weekly, biweekly, and monthly safety inspections. Second in command to the Captain. Oversees all deck operations. Responsible for the overall safety and seaworthiness of the ship. Takes command of the ship when the captain is unavailable. May manage the deck crew and assign tasks. The Second Mate is responsible for all chart corrections and the bridge's upkeep. Responsible for navigation, including route planning and maintaining charts. Stands watch on the bridge, monitoring the position and course of the ship. Assists with cargo operations and emergency procedures. Assist in training junior marine staff. The Third Mate oversees chart supplies inventory and procurement as needed. Stands watch during designated hours, monitoring the ship's position and navigating. Focuses on safety procedures, including fire and lifeboat drills. Assists the other mates with various tasks, such as maintaining deck equipment and documentation. Responsible for safety checks and reporting. Responsible for all chart corrections, light lists, bridge resources, and Notice to Mariners publications are kept current. Responsible for replying to safety or office memorandums and writing all safety inspection forms

Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Must possess and maintain a Merchant Mariner Credential with a Master’s endorsement of at least 100 GRT.
  • Strong understanding of US Coast Guard Sub-chapter T and K.
  • Requires strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Must be experienced at multi-tasking and remain flexible in a demanding and fast-paced environment.
  • Microsoft Office experience.
  • Valid US driver’s license and a clean driving record.
  • Must pass a security background check and DOT drug test.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in tourism and cruise industry.
  • Master’s license for a 100-ton inland vessel.
  • License endorsement required for “Unlimited Radar Observer”.
  • First Aid and CPR Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Each position holds a position on the ship’s emergency station bill.  Must perform requirements of emergency station bill for both drills and actual emergencies to include fire, flooding, man overboard, abandon ship, medical, and spill response.
  • Operate the vessel during assigned night watches to the highest professional and Alaskan Dream Cruises standards, with the safety of guests, crew, and vessel paramount.
  • Monitor communication equipment and keep logs and records as required by federal, state, and local laws and regulations and Alaskan Dream Cruises.
  • Make use all bridge tools and personnel, alerting the Captain as needed or per orders.
  • Oversee the ship’s safety and medical locker and all equipment. Ensure all equipment is inspected daily, weekly, and monthly and the required forms are filled out and kept in the onboard safety log.
  • Assist in the expeditious preparation of the ship on turn days for oncoming guests, which includes loading the ship’s stores, taking on potable water, moving luggage and laundry, and other duties as assigned.
  • Special projects may be assigned as required by the business.
