The Chief Litigation Officer for Diabetes MiniMed will report directly to the General Counsel and lead the organization's litigation strategy, ensuring alignment with Medtronic's mission to transform diabetes care. This critical leadership role will oversee complex litigation matters, provide strategic legal counsel, and protect the company's rights and reputation in a highly regulated medical device industry. The Chief Litigation Officer will play a pivotal role in mitigating risk, driving compliance, and influencing business decisions across the Diabetes MiniMed organization. This position is an exciting opportunity to work with Medtronic's Diabetes business. Medtronic has announced its intention to separate the Diabetes division to promote future growth and innovation within the business and reallocate investments and resources across Medtronic, subject to applicable information and consultation requirements. This separation provides our team with a bold opportunity to unleash our potential, enabling us to operate with greater speed and agility. As a separate entity, we anticipate leveraging increased investments to drive meaningful innovation and enhance our impact on patient care. This role requires you to work on-site at our Northridge, CA office at least 3 days per week.

  • Developing and leading litigation strategies that align with the Diabetes MiniMed business's objectives, including product liability defense, intellectual property disputes, and commercial matters.
  • Acting as the primary legal advisor on all litigation-related issues, providing strategic counsel to leadership and business teams.
  • Ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards, particularly those specific to medical devices and diabetes care.
  • Managing high-stakes litigation cases, including evaluating the advisability of defending or prosecuting lawsuits, negotiating settlements, and representing the organization in legal proceedings.
  • Collaborating cross-functionally with regulatory, quality, compliance, and business teams to proactively address legal risks and align litigation strategies with business priorities.
  • Advising leadership on changes in global laws and regulations that impact litigation and risk management strategies.
  • Championing innovative approaches to resolving complex legal issues, conceptualizing solutions to mitigate risk and protect the organization's interests.
  • Making significant decisions that directly impact the financial performance, public image, and operational success of the Diabetes MiniMed business.
  • Building and maintaining strategic relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including regulators, industry groups, and external legal counsel, to advocate for the organization's priorities and compliance initiatives.
  • Serving as the principal legal spokesperson for litigation matters, influencing leadership at all levels and driving alignment on strategic initiatives.
  • Leading and developing a team of litigation professionals, fostering an inclusive and high-performing environment.
  • Providing mentorship, coaching, and career development opportunities for team members to meet and exceed performance expectations.
  • Prioritizing team objectives and aligning them with broader business and legal department goals.
  • Conducting regular performance reviews, setting clear performance goals, and guiding team members toward professional growth.
  • Establishing organizational structure and talent strategies to support the Diabetes MiniMed business's litigation objectives.
  • Requires a Bachelor's degree and 15 years of relevant legal experience, including 10+ years in managerial roles; extensive experience in high-stakes litigation and healthcare law strongly preferred.
  • Or, an advanced degree with 13 years of relevant legal experience, including 10+ years in managerial roles; extensive experience in high-stakes litigation and healthcare law strongly preferred.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and admission to practice law in good standing.
  • Significant experience with product liability and intellectual property litigation within the medical device or healthcare industry.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage cross-functional legal teams in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Experience working with executive management and making presentations to a board of directors.
  • Broad experience with litigation/investigations across the spectrum of a public company's functions: regulatory law/FDA interactions, government investigations, employment law matters, etc.
  • Experience across the global stage with management of matters and people in Latin America, EMEA, and/or APAC regions.
