About The Position

Performs administrative and managerial work directing an investigative program. Work involves directing, planning, and coordinating investigative activities; and supervising the work of others. Works under minimal supervision with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by an organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or by the United States Department of Education (USDE). Major course work in Criminal Justice or a related field preferred. Each year of experience as described below in excess of the required eight years may be substituted for thirty semester hours from an accredited college or university on a year-for year basis.
  • Eight years full-time, wage-earning criminal justice administration or law enforcement administration experience to include three years in the supervision of employees.
  • Currently holds an active Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Peace Officer license or meets the minimum standards for initial Peace Officer licensure set forth in TCOLE Rule 217.1 inclusive of having passed the TCOLE Peace Officer licensing examination within two years of the Commission’s receipt of the license application.
  • Applicants must pass the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) Physical Performance Standards test in order to continue in the selection process.
  • Employees must annually pass the OIG Physical Performance Standards test or OIG Job Simulation test for continued employment.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of program administration and management.
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, rules, regulations, and statutes.
  • Skill to communicate ideas and instructions clearly and concisely.
  • Skill to coordinate with other staff, departments, officials, agencies, organizations, and the public.
  • Skill in administrative problem-solving techniques.
  • Skill to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, crawl, twist, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs and ladders, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry 45 lbs. and over, perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle, operate motor equipment, and use firearms.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with budget administration, grant administration or human resources administration preferred.
  • Knowledge of state government and the components of the state criminal justice system preferred.
  • Knowledge of agency and departmental organizational structure, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, and directs the development of activities related to program operations; and oversees the development, implementation, and evaluation of program goals, objectives, and operational procedures.
  • Directs the coordination of investigative activity to include violations of criminal law and Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) policy; coordinates program functions with other agency and division operations; and serves as liaison with local, state, and federal agencies and organizations involved with program operations.
  • Directs the coordination of program budget requests; and determines the allocation of the budget funds.
  • Responds to law enforcement duties to include pursuit of offenders and criminals by foot and car and assists in the restraint of offenders and criminals by using proven physical abilities of cardiovascular endurance, anaerobic power, muscular strength and endurance, explosive leg power, and agility.
  • Plans, assigns and supervises the work of others.
  • Performs a variety of marginal duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.
