The Chief Engineer is responsible for all mechanical and engineering operations for Capital One Arena and select MSE union properties, ensuring critical building systems are safe, compliant, and event-ready at all times. This role leads and develops engineering staff, manages contractors, and directs the daily operation and preventive maintenance of essential mechanical, electrical, and building control systems. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years of facility-related work experience, including customer service and leadership experience.
  • Certification as a Universal Technician for CFCs.
  • Must maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • Experience with Johnson Control Meta Systems or similar BMS System.
  • Exposure to HVAC, fluid handling/pumping, fluid filtering, mechanical systems, and electrical systems operation, boilers, chillers, water source heat pumps, cooling towers, and split systems.
  • Solid understanding of computer applications, including Microsoft Office and CMMS systems.
  • Outstanding verbal/written communication skills.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs., use ladders up to 30 ft, and work at heights of 110 ft.
  • Possess mechanical and electrical proficiency.
  • This position is considered an essential personnel position and is required to report to work during inclement weather, and work when required, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

  • DC 3rd Class Steam Engineers License preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the engineering and mechanical operations for Capital One Arena.
  • Coordinate engineering support staff and operations at all remote MSE union locations.
  • Ensures all mechanical systems are professionally maintained and remain event ready.
  • Supervise all activities of MSE mechanical contractors working within the building, either as representatives of the building itself or tenants.
  • Assists with analyzing and resolving work problems.
  • Handle time and production of customer service requests.
  • Control the daily operation of all mechanical equipment in the physical plant and buildings.
  • Actively participate in emergency response procedures, technical and safety training programs.
  • Supervise and direct engineering staff and monitor performance on their assigned responsibilities.
  • Check malfunctioning equipment and establishes corrective action required to restore it to satisfactory operating condition.
  • Lead departmental staff, including selection, scheduling, and job assignments, counseling, appraisals, and recognition.
  • Follow departmental policy for the safe storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Preparing and submitting purchase order requests, developing sources for stock materials, and performing periodic checks for supplies.
  • Performs the maintenance and operation of mechanical equipment (Chillers, cooling tower, and CRAC units), electrical and power generation equipment, and systems to support the environment.
  • Responsible for all building controls, electrical systems, applying on-the-job training, operations manuals, and documentation under the MSE scope of work.
  • Perform all predictive, planned, preventative, and routine maintenance and assist in developing, maintaining, and improving, as needed, the venue's preventive maintenance programs, schedules, work instructions, SOPs, and operational procedures.
  • Inspects and repairs pumps, fans, valves, and motors, ensuring proper operation of the client's equipment and systems.
  • Responsible for alerting management of building discrepancies.
  • Identify safety hazards within the building and incorporate the remediation of such hazards to ensure that the building's staff and occupants work in a safe environment.
  • Participate and train all staff in the safety training program.
  • Ensure that compliance with all regulatory laws and guidelines is met as they relate to the operation of the building's infrastructure.
