This is a key leadership position for Cox Media Group Orlando. You will manage all engineering functions including security, RF operations, all broadcast and digital distribution systems, equipment and building maintenance, engineering personnel management and budgets including capital planning and operating. The television Chief Engineer supports the growth and profitability of the TV operations through maintaining equipment necessary to deliver news, advertising, and information across our TV platforms. This position provides proactive maintenance support to ensure product quality, 24/7 uptimes, reduced business operational risk and provide strategic planning of TV engineering to drive our business forward.

  • Responsible for the day-to-day management of the broadcast operation and technology team.
  • Trouble shoot and solve equipment and air chain issues quickly and efficiently.
  • Recognizing and working safely around high voltages and other dangers.
  • Management of compliance with all regulatory and governmental agencies.
  • Management of station assets, information technology, transmitter facilities and building operations.
  • Implementation and support of IT infrastructure, IP-based production workflows, and cybersecurity efforts.
  • Assist and advise the Director of Engineering & Operations through regular and consistent communication.
  • Responsible for ensuring quality broadcast operations including on air, news gathering and production.
  • Model good leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Maintaining a fun, collaborative and effective work environment.
  • Responsible for maintaining equipment for all aspects of on-air product – TV air chain, IT networks, graphics, weather and news production systems.
  • Manage integration and maintenance of TV engineering equipment – both IT and transmission.
  • Document equipment & wiring of systems & equipment using a computerized database, word processor & drawing program
  • Support station & field operations, as necessary.
  • Create instructional materials and teach Engineering and non-Engineering personnel the proper use of equipment.
  • Must be available to support 24/7 operations.
  • Foster open communication with staff, and support team's vision, direction, and priorities.
  • Assist in establishing mission critical procedures.
  • Support a positive business climate which motivates employees.
  • Demonstrate the flexibility necessary to adjust to changing/additional duties and responsibilities as the markets and company changes.
  • Maximize uptime by managing repairs and preventive maintenance on digital and analog systems and transmission facilities.
  • Able to troubleshoot and creatively problem solve.
  • Must possess positive customer service attitude with both internal and external contacts; flexible, patient, courteous, professional, and problem solver.
  • 3 - 5 years of experience managing a broadcast engineering department or equivalent.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be team-oriented and capable of working independently.
  • Must have strong proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • A strong IT background and understanding, including a detailed knowledge of the latest IP-based broadcast television systems.
  • Comprehensive understanding of FCC Broadcast rules.
  • Knowledge of MEP, infrastructure, and backup systems.
  • Able to quickly identify priority items and complete tasks efficienty in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Must posess a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs. and climb ladders.
  • Position requires being on call after hours including weekends and holidays.
  • Varied and extended hours may occasionally involve some weekends, holidays, and necessary travel.
  • Minimum of 10 years of Broadcast Engineering experience
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A) from four-year college or university
  • SBE and other professional certifications
