About The Position

This is a skilled, working, overseeing position.  Technical work encompassing the installation, maintenance, overhaul, calibration and repair of all types of generating equipment, steam, gas turbines, diesel, circuitry, switchgear, relays, metering, transformers, motors, generators, wiring, boiler controls, and other related equipment at an electrical generating plant.  Job involves moderate labor.  General and specific assignments are received through plant administrative directives and conferences with considerable latitude for the use of independent judgment in the selection of work methods and procedures.  Reports to the Maintenance Foreman.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a recognized high school or possession of a recognized equivalent certification.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of satisfactory performance, evaluations and experience.
  • A valid Florida driver’s license. Certified electrician certificate.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform previously illustrated duties as well as duties of all lower classifications. Perform work in a lower classification if conditions require.
  • Willingness and ability to work extended hours when required including nights, weekends, and holidays. Willingness and ability to work overtime, both scheduled and unscheduled as needed, and to report to work on short notice in an emergency.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations to determine power factor, KVA, MVA, etc.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of power plant experience, with a good working knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Working knowledge of power plant red tag system, safety procedures, operational procedures, and environmental regulations.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all the duties required of a Journeyman Electrician, such as installing new equipment, tearing down, evaluating, rebuilding, running conductor, pulling wire, and testing the operation of various types power plant equipment. Troubleshoots problems, analyzes data, conducts tests and provides solutions.
  • Assigns, coordinates, and oversees related work of subordinates. Keeps records, time sheets, payroll records, reports activities, orders spare parts, maintains specified inventory, and performs related work as required.
  • Works in close cooperation and coordination with the Chief Shift Leaders and Maintenance Foreman to assure the safe, efficient operation and maintenance of the Plant.
  • Assists in budgeting process for various jobs, equipment, and other job-related materials.
  • Coordinates with outside contractors. Obtains price quotes and requisitions parts as required.
  • Oversees employees and implements all applicable rules, regulations, environmental, safety, and City Power Plant policies. Responsible for implementing required disciplinary action when applicable.
  • Oversees employees maintaining work areas and other assigned areas in a safe, clean condition.
  • Operates and maintains computerized work request system and other computerized records.
  • Effectively and independently oversees maintenance and control of equipment within established procedures under all circumstances including emergency conditions.
  • Technically and operationally understands all power plant systems, including electrical switchgear up to 2,400 volts, and the ability to safely and effectively oversee and/or operate these systems.
  • Troubleshoots operational systems including problem identification, evaluation of alternative solutions, and implementation of proper corrective action, including minor mechanical adjustment or repairs, if necessary.
  • Directs shift personnel and other employees to perform routine and emergency maintenance, including the knowledge to accurately indicate the location and operation of all plant equipment, valves and electrical switchgear.
  • Trains and evaluates the performance of newly hired or promoted Electrical maintenance personnel. Provides all appropriate/required training and evaluation for all maintenance personnel.
  • Enforces all applicable rules, regulations, environmental, safety, City and Power Plant policies.
  • Oversees, assigns, inspects and assumes the responsibility for daily maintenance, corrosion removal/prevention, cleaning, and safety/environmental related housekeeping of the power plant, control rooms, containment areas, equipment, and other areas as directed or assigned.
  • Oversees and assumes the responsibility for maintaining accurate, preventive maintenance reports as well as hourly review of and reporting problems indicated by automated logs.
  • Reviews all required records and logs for accuracy and corrects any deficiencies or errors.
  • Coordinates with contractors on safety, environmental and other related concerns.
  • Oversees and instructs subordinate personnel in the proper methods of starting, stopping, and operating turbine-generators, auxiliary equipment, and all other equipment necessary to generate load requirements.
  • Makes periodic inspections of the power plant and equipment to see that is it functioning properly.
  • Issues clearances and isolates all equipment that is out for repairs following all power plant safety and other procedures.
  • Oversees and takes the responsibility for cleanup of power plant prior to shift change.
