About The Position

The primary purpose of the position is to promote the understanding of history in the Albemarle region of northeastern North Carolina. This position will implement the museum's educational programs and collaborate with the museum's exhibit programming.

Requirements

  • Must be able to work Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm with some night and weekend hours as needed.
  • Must be able to understand complex problems and collaborate to explore alternative solutions.
  • Must organize and prioritize the work schedules of others to manage multiple tasks and/or projects.
  • Must make decisions that have significant impact on a department's credibility, operations and/or services.
  • Must be able to communicate in-depth information for the purpose of interpreting and/or negotiating.
  • Bachelor's degree in Art History, Biology, Botany, Conservation, Education, History or Zoology from an appropriately accredited institution
  • four years of museum or related work
  • an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Thorough knowledge of North Carolina, Southern and American history.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises Museum Educator I, part-time employees, volunteers, interns, and contractual employees.
  • Responsible for fiscal management, and personnel roles to direct the education department.
  • Coordinates all educational outreach, including virtual and social media programs.
  • Responsible for presentation of the region's history by interpretation and development of materials and programs related to exhibits and programs.
  • Recruits and trains volunteers and staff as museum docents to provide tours with training agendas.
  • Works with head of artifact collections and exhibits to develop and pair educational programs with related history.
  • Supervises and oversees the information-reception specialists.
  • Responsible for greeting visitors and providing museum information.
  • Provides written materials suitable for publications, such as newspapers, museum magazines, social media, and program brochures.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain an effective professional working relationship with museum staff, government officials, academic and public advisors, museum board, volunteers, and the public.
  • Required to represent the museum in a variety of program offerings and public functions.
