About The Position

The Chief of the Division of Health and Safety at the Department of Agriculture is responsible for overseeing the implementation of Pennsylvania's Pesticide Control Act and related regulations. This role involves managing various programs related to pesticides, farm safety, and environmental health, while also providing leadership and direction to administrative personnel and specialists. The position requires collaboration with other management personnel and the development of program funding grants in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Requirements

  • Four years of professional investigative, enforcement, or advisory experience in an agricultural regulatory program, and four years of paraprofessional experience implementing an environmental or occupational health and safety program.
  • One year of experience as a Pesticide Specialist, Plant Inspection Program Specialist, or Plant Industry Regional Supervisor.
  • Four years of professional investigative, enforcement, or advisory experience in an agricultural regulatory program, and a bachelor's degree in agriculture, biology, or a closely related field.
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the implementation of Pennsylvania's Pesticide Control Act and related regulations.
  • Manage the Pesticide, Farm Safety, Environmental, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), Hemp, and noxious weed programs.
  • Enforce laws governing hemp, controlled plants, noxious weeds, and farm safety.
  • Supervise administrative personnel and specialists managing botany, hemp, and pesticide initiatives.
  • Recruit new division staff and coordinate field staff activities with the Chief of the Division of Agronomic and Regional Services.
  • Develop, negotiate, implement, and administer program funding grants in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Prepare reports to support grants and participate in meetings concerning EPA Cooperative Agreements.
  • Direct the Botany and Weed Management program and oversee the maintenance of the state herbarium collection.
