About The Position

The Chief Development and Communications Officer (CDCO) at Maryland Legal Aid will play a crucial role in enhancing the organization's visibility and financial support through strategic communication and development initiatives. This executive position involves leading a team to secure funding from various sources, aligning messaging with the organization's mission, and fostering partnerships to advance civil legal aid for low-income Marylanders.

Requirements

  • Proven track record in institutional, individual, and corporate fundraising.
  • Experience in the greater-Maryland philanthropic landscape is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of the interconnectedness of marketing, communications, and fundraising.
  • Experience in assessing, building, and executing against a strategic plan for development.
  • Ability to operationalize and execute strategic initiatives effectively.
  • Experience in identifying, cultivating, and stewarding individual and institutional relationships.
  • Strong analytical and planning skills with success in analyzing ROI for marketing and communications investments.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building a pipeline of fundraising targets for individual donors and private philanthropy.
  • Knowledge of donor management systems and best practices in fundraising.
  • Experience engaging BIPOC and historically marginalized audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement integrated strategic communications and development plans that support the organization's goals.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to align communications and development initiatives with strategic priorities.
  • Lead and expand the fundraising program to secure resources from individuals, foundations, corporations, and government sources.
  • Oversee the grants management process from identification of potential funding sources to proposal submission and report compliance.
  • Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with donors, funders, and key partners.
  • Lead the communication team to build relationships with media and key stakeholders, providing impactful content across various channels.
  • Ensure consistent messaging that reflects Maryland Legal Aid's mission, vision, and values.
  • Manage the organization's brand and reputation, including crisis communication planning and response.
  • Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing team that values excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Manage departmental budgets, ensuring efficient use of resources.
  • Develop and implement evaluation frameworks to measure the effectiveness of communication strategies and development activities.
