About The Position

The Chief Counsel for the Atlanta Field Location serves as the principal legal advisor to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This role involves providing expert legal counsel, overseeing legal programs, and ensuring compliance with immigration law and procedures. The Chief Counsel is responsible for strategic planning, litigation support, and managing legal staff, while also advising high-level officials on complex legal matters related to immigration and customs enforcement.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Possess a professional law degree (e.g., J.D., LL.B.) from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Active member in good standing of the Bar of a state or territory of the U.S.
  • Experience at or above the GS-14/15 grade level in federal service or equivalent in the private sector.
  • Demonstrated executive leadership and supervisory experience related to immigration law and procedures.

  • Strong litigation background, particularly in immigration and national security.
  • Experience in managing legal and logistical matters in an agency or law firm.
  • Excellent legal writing skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and expert direction for ICE legal programs and initiatives in OPLA Atlanta.
  • Oversee strategic planning, development, implementation, and administration of all ICE legal programs.
  • Function as the principal legal consultant to the HSI Special Agent in Charge and ERO Field Office Director.
  • Provide litigation support and counsel to U.S. Attorney's Offices and the Department of Justice Office of Immigration Litigation.
  • Direct the provision of legal advice and services to ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Manage and assess new DHS and ICE policy issuances for impact on legal programs.
  • Participate in making recommendations on overall office programs with senior management.
  • Serve as an expert advisor to high-level officials on immigration and customs enforcement legal issues.
