The Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) is an executive responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of regulatory, legal, and ethical compliance across the organization’s vertical construction operations, functions and affiliates. This role ensures that the company adheres to federal, state, and local regulations, industry standards, and internal policies, while fostering a culture of integrity, transparency, and accountability. This role will report to the Executive Vice President & General Counsel of the Company.

Requirements

  • B.A. required; J.D. preferred.
  • 7-10+ years of relevant experience in building and enforcing a large-scale company compliance program based on relevant laws and standards.
  • Background in corporate legal affairs and risk management, ideally within construction or related industries.
  • Demonstrated expertise in government contracting, bid processes, and regulatory matters specific to construction.
  • Proven ability to manage complex compliance issues in a dynamic, high-stakes environment.
  • Strong critical thinking, analytical, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication, writing and presentation abilities.
  • Experience working with regulators (or as one) in high-profile matters.
  • Deep background at a large law firm, in-house legal or compliance department, or government enforcement agency (e.g., United States Attorney’s Office, Attorney General’s Office etc.).
  • Ability to foster a culture of integrity, transparency, and accountability

Responsibilities

  • Compliance Program Leadership Design, implement, enforce and continuously improve company-wide compliance programs, policies, and procedures tailored to the vertical construction industry and Suffolk’s relevant affiliate entities including design build, sourcing/logistics and others as developed. Regularly train and communicate compliance requirements and initiatives to all employees and ensure effective enforcement consistent best practices in this area along with relevant state and federal guidance. Monitor evolving regulatory requirements and update programs accordingly.
  • Risk Management Identify, assess, and mitigate compliance risks, including those related to government contracting, bid processes, safety, and labor practices. Advise senior management on risk exposure and develop strategies to address vulnerabilities.
  • Regulatory Oversight Stay current with construction-specific laws and regulations, including OSHA, environmental, U.S. Justice Department and relevant labor standards. Under the direction of the General Counsel, serve as a liaison with regulatory agencies and manage compliance audits and investigations. Prepare and submit compliance reports to regulatory bodies and internal stakeholders.
  • Internal Audits & Investigations Support internal audit processes to ensure adherence to legal and regulatory requirements. Support/lead investigations into suspected violations and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Training & Culture Building Develop and deliver compliance training programs for employees, contractors, and project teams. Promote a culture of ethical decision-making and integrity throughout the organization.
  • Policy Development Formulate and update relevant company policies and standards to ensure safe, ethical, and efficient operations.
  • Third-Party Due Diligence Establish procedures for ongoing compliance monitoring of clients, vendors, subcontractors, and business partners.
