Job Summary The Chess Professional is responsible for delivering high-quality private and group instruction while building engagement among members and guests interested in chess. This role emphasizes strategic development, critical thinking, problem-solving, and sportsmanship. The Chess Professional creates enriching experiences for students of all ages and skill levels while supporting the growth of chess programming at the Village. Essential Job Functions · Teach private lessons and group chess classes for youth and adults. · Interact with employees, members, and guests in alignment with Village Standards (People, Places, and Programs). · Organize, promote, and facilitate chess events, including casual play mixers, scholastic tournaments, simultaneous exhibitions, and round-robin competitions. · Develop and manage ongoing chess leagues, scholastic chess clubs, and junior training clinics. · Serve as a mentor and coach, cultivating discipline, focus, sportsmanship, and competitive growth in students. · Support club-wide initiatives and collaborate with staff to enhance member engagement through chess programming. · · Identify and onboard promising junior players to assist with classes, events, and mentoring younger students, fostering leadership, responsibility, and community involvement. Knowledge & Skills Required · Minimum 10 years of competitive chess experience with National and International ratings (USCF and Fide) . · Minimum 5 years of teaching/coaching experience (private instruction, scholastic programs, or group classes). · Demonstrated professional-level playing experience. · Strong instructional, interpersonal, and communication skills with youth and adults. · Customer-service-driven mindset and ability to work in a member-focused environment. · Must successfully pass a criminal background check if teaching youth programs. · Ability to work occasional weekends as needed for events, clinics, or tournaments. Knowledge & Skills Preferred · Experience working in a high-end health club , private school, academic setting Required Abilities Physical Activity · Frequent standing and walking while teaching, supervising games, or facilitating events. · Sitting for extended periods during lessons or analysis sessions. · Clear verbal communication to explain concepts, demonstrate moves, and provide feedback. · Occasional movement of teaching materials or event equipment. Physical Requirement · Ability to lift, carry, or move up to 20 pounds of chess or event-related equipment. Working Conditions · Combination of office/administrative duties and interactive member-facing activities. · Teaching, coaching, and evaluating games in a classroom or club environment. · Occasional outdoor or special-event programming as needed. · Weekend work may be required for special programs, tournaments, or member events.
