Xcel Energy is currently seeking one or more individuals to fill the role of Chemistry Technician at the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant in Welch, MN. This position is a union position and is hierarchical. This position will be posted for 10 working days starting December 23, 2025, and will be taken down January 8, 2026. The anticipated pay for this position can start at $45.38 and will be place at a level that is commensurate with candidate’s skills and experience. Once all progression steps are completed the pay will be $60.50. Summary The Chemistry Technician performs chemistry and radiochemistry sampling and analysis to support Technical Specifications, Technical Requirements Manual, and various other Regulatory and site requirements. Under minimal supervision the candidate will perform quantitative analysis including sampling of radioactive and non-radioactive effluents of liquid, solid and gaseous material. This position may also require performance of radiation surveys. Additional responsibilities include providing guidance or assistance to Plant Operations, Engineering, Plant Maintenance, and Chemistry Supervision and providing training of chemistry personnel in chemical and radiochemical analysis. This job requires the support of a rotating 12-hour shift schedule, 365 days a year including refueling or forced plant outages and is a member of the emergency response organization. Other Must be able to meet and maintain the requirements of unescorted access at a Nuclear Power Plant Must be able to meet and maintain the requirements of respiratory/SCBA qualifications. Satisfactory complete the initial chem tech training program within specified time requirement. Must reside or be willing to relocate within 60 minutes of the plant.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of four years’ experience in the fields of water treatment, radio-chemical analysis or chemical analysis or the equivalent combination of formal education/training and experience.
  • Must be able to meet and maintain the requirements of unescorted access at a Nuclear Power Plant
  • Must be able to meet and maintain the requirements of respiratory/SCBA qualifications.
  • Satisfactory complete the initial chem tech training program within specified time requirement.
  • Must reside or be willing to relocate within 60 minutes of the plant.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in commercial nuclear power plant.
  • Navy Engineering Laboratory Technician (ELT)
  • ANSI 18.1 Radiation Protection qualifications.
  • Bachelor’s or a Master’s Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering preferred.
