About The Position

The position involves supervising and training laboratory personnel in the analysis of various sample types according to EPA methodologies. The role is crucial for ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and maintaining high-quality analytical practices as per NELAP guidelines. The supervisor will coordinate staffing, resources, and equipment to meet the analytical needs of both internal and external clients while validating data quality and regulatory compliance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific field (e.g., Chemistry, Environmental Science).
  • Experience in laboratory management or supervision.
  • Strong knowledge of EPA methodologies and NELAP standards.
  • Proficiency in various analytical techniques and instrumentation such as ICP, GC, and spectrophotometry.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for team management and collaboration.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in a relevant scientific field.
  • Experience with method development and validation.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
  • Certification in laboratory management or quality assurance.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and directs staff to ensure adherence to regulatory methods, SOPs, and Sewer District policies.
  • Evaluates performance, assists with staff development plans, and provides coaching and hands-on job instruction.
  • Assists in the hiring and promotion process as required.
  • Directs quality control and quality assurance on analyses performed by subordinates.
  • Assists with short and long-term objective planning and sets priorities for resource utilization.
  • Assigns work and schedules to meet varying workloads, deadlines, or personnel changes.
  • Encourages cooperation among laboratory team members and fosters team spirit.
  • Reviews and validates data against quality and regulatory requirements from various analytical techniques and instrumentation.
  • Assists with facilitation of new ideas from peers and subordinates to improve processes.
  • Evaluates analytical processes in conjunction with management and assists with streamlining procedures.
  • Analyzes and maintains quality control/quality assurance data from advanced instrumentation and procedures.
  • Critically examines information, equipment, and software programs for ease of use and applicability.
  • Makes recommendations for purchase following evaluation and tests new equipment and methods prior to use.
  • Reviews work output to ensure staff is completing according to specification and verifies accuracy of reporting.
  • Keeps current with new systems, methods, or processes and assists with special projects.
  • Provides analytical data, technical support, and data evaluation to other departments and external stakeholders.
  • Prepares and presents lectures about new methods, procedures, and instrumentation.
