About The Position

This position is responsible for the coordination of all station chemistry and environmental aspects. The position includes conduct of environmental personnel, supervisors, staff chemists and technicians in support of maintaining station goals for primary (reactor coolant and support systems), secondary chemistry (all aspects of the steam cycle and support systems), Water and Waste Water Treatment and Radiochemistry facilities. In addition will ensure chemistry staff personnel are properly advised and knowledgeable regarding air, water, and waste compliance at generation facilities including all local, state, and federal environmental regulations, and provide an understanding of all regulatory compliance projects and issues that impact maintaining regulatory compliance.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a Science or Engineering discipline (Chemistry or Chemical Engineering preferred).
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in the nuclear power industry (5+ years preferred, including leadership experience).
  • Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with EPRI Chemistry Guidelines and INPO/WANO performance indicators.
  • Residency Requirement: Must maintain a primary residence within a 60-minute commute of the facility to satisfy Emergency Plan (E-Plan) response protocols and ensure timely reporting for emergency call-outs.
  • Outage Commitment: Must be available to support periodic site refueling outages. This includes working alternate 12-hour shifts (day or night), weekends, and holidays for the duration of the outage window (typically 3–6 weeks).
  • Skills: Exceptional analytical, human relations, and communication skills are required to interface with site leadership and regulatory bodies.
  • Environment: Work is performed in an office setting and "hard hat" industrial areas (exposure to dust, noise, heat, and cold).
  • Physical Demands: Ability to climb ladders, enter confined spaces, and wear a respirator as required for plant walk-downs and inspections.
  • Travel: Occasional travel to other production plants or nationwide corporate locations (Vistra) as required.

Responsibilities

  • Programmatic Leadership: Direct the implementation and execution of department programs, ensuring all activities are completed in accordance with standardized procedures and NRC/INPO guidelines.
  • Operational Oversight: Provide technical guidance for primary and secondary water chemistry control to mitigate system degradation and optimize plant longevity.
  • Personnel Management: Assign tasks and manage personnel resources; responsible for the coaching, development, and qualification of assigned staff for increased responsibility.
  • Regulatory & Safety Compliance: Provide leadership and direction to ensure full compliance with radiation safety requirements and ALARA principles.
  • Outage Command & Control: Direct chemistry outage activities, including primary system shutdowns, degassing, and startup chemistry control. This may involve specialized roles within the Outage Command Center (OCC).
