About The Position

The Chemistry Department at Wright State University is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Laboratory Manager to oversee chemistry teaching laboratories. The laboratory manager will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of first-year chemistry and organic chemistry teaching laboratories, including chemical preparation, equipment management, experiment set up, safety disposal of chemicals, and educational support.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Chemistry or related field with a strong background in chemistry laboratory work and at least two years of experience at the start of appointment working in chemistry laboratories.

Nice To Haves

  • M.S. in Chemistry or related field and at least one year of experience at the start of appointment working in organic chemistry laboratories.
  • A previous supervisory or teaching role in chemistry laboratories is also preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Management of first-year and organic chemistry laboratories (55%)
  • Prepare chemicals and equipment setup of weekly experiments.
  • Order materials and equipment.
  • Perform regular maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment to ensure they are in good working condition when set out for student use.
  • Monitor lab supplies during lab classes to ensure availability and smooth running of labs.
  • Oversee proper and safe functioning of laboratories, including reporting and coordination of work order with Facilities Management and EHS.
  • Update SOPs for experiment preparations as needed.
  • Manage and coordinate with EHS the disposal of chemical wastes generated in the teaching labs
  • Teaching assistant and student assistant management (15%)
  • Oversee teaching assistants' overall performance and lab safety conduct in lab classes.
  • Manage attendance of teaching assistants and coordinate schedules as needed for unexpected absences.
  • Hire and supervise student workers helping in lab preparations.
  • Hold safety trainings and laboratory orientations for TAs and prep room student workers. Ensure that their EHS trainings are completed and are current.
  • Educational and outreach activities support (15%)
  • Assist instructors in weekly training of teaching assistants.
  • Work with instructors on the development, updates, and revisions of laboratory experiments.
  • Assist in preparation of materials and equipment for lecture demonstrations and outreach activities.
  • Assist in other chemistry teaching laboratories as needed.
  • Chemical safety officer for the department (15%)
  • Provide intake point for chemicals ordered in the 1st and 2nd year teaching labs, attach bar codes and enter chemicals into the department chemical inventory, and swipe bar codes of used up containers to remove them from department inventory.
  • Dispose of outdated and nonfunctional equipment and chemicals in 1st and 2nd year laboratories.
  • Maintain a current file of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for the chemicals used in 1st and 2nd year laboratories.
  • Assist other chemistry laboratories with chemical and equipment rearrangement and disposal as needed
