The University of Virginia Department of Chemistry within the College of Arts & Sciences seeks applicants for a Lab Tech 2 position to work in the lab of Prof. David Cafiso. The Lab Tech 2 will provide technical lab support by performing complex lab and research related tasks. They act as specialists on research methods and equipment functions specific to investigations. They have the authority to adapt methods and procedures to meet the needs of research. Lab Tech 2 employees perform daily activities without supervision; their longer-term assignments require greater oversight. Lab Tech 2 employees often train others on work processes and policies. The successful candidate will be expected to: Perform laboratory experiments that include molecular biology and protein biochemistry such as PCR, bacterial expression, and protein purification. Carry out magnetic resonance and biophysical experiments on bacterially expressed proteins. Coordinate and participate in a variety of routine technical duties by assisting graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, undergraduate students, and staff. Order supplies and equipment for the lab and maintain an organized system of operation. Participate in weekly group meetings and assist in evaluating research methods, procedures, and techniques, based on established objectives. Assist the Principal Investigator in developing new strategies and techniques for experimentation. Facilitate collaborations with other laboratories. In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
