About The Position

Serves as a Clinical Chemist and LRN-C Coordinator (for a Tier 3 LRN-C) in support of routine clinical chemistry testing at DCHHS and with the Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) program. Collaborates with the Biological LRN Laboratories. Supports the creation of a laboratory-wide safety culture by serving as a liaison to the Safety Officer to ensure a healthy and safe workplace while performing tasks with minimal supervision and extensive latitude for using initiative and independent judgment.

Requirements

  • Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Chemistry or in a related field of study.
  • Strong knowledge of chemistry principles and techniques, particularly in at least one of the following: GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, and/or IA.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective training and collaboration.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and exercise independent judgement.
  • Proficiency in maintaining quality control and preventive maintenance documentation.
  • Requires bending, sitting and standing for long periods.
  • May need to lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Ability to drive to various work site locations.
  • Must have the ability and be comfortable wearing PPE and respirator in containment facilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefer experience in a laboratory setting using at least one of the following: GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, and/or IA technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of the Laboratory Director or designee, coordinates activities to ensure accurate testing and analysis of specimens using various analytical techniques, including but not limited to: gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), liquid chromatograph tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), and Immunoassay analysis (IA).
  • Provides training on chemical threat testing, utilizing GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, and/or IA technology, as well as training on specimen collection, packaging, and shipping protocols.
  • Maintains and updates quality control and preventive maintenance documentation, and standard operating procedures for all analyses.
  • Implements new chemistry methods and procedures, ensuring adherence to protocols.
  • Functions as the LRN-C Coordinator and liaison with the Laboratory Response Network for chemical threats (LRN-C) to ensure preparedness and response capacity for potential chemical threat events. 10
  • Supports laboratory-wide safety culture by serving as a liaison to the Safety Officer, ensuring a healthy workplace.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
