About The Position

The Chemist position at the Department of the Treasury's Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) involves performing complex examinations on samples and formulas of regulated commodities. The role requires providing expert regulatory interpretation of analytical data, preparing technical reports, and leading projects to enhance technical capabilities within the division. The Chemist will also represent the laboratory in professional meetings and negotiations, ensuring compliance with U.S. laws and regulations.

Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service.
  • Experience examining samples or formulas using analysis tools such as GC-IRMS, GC-MS/MS, LC-MS/MS, or ICP-MS.
  • Knowledge of U.S. laws and regulations applicable to regulated products and industry practices.
  • Familiarity with ISO 17025 standards and protocols for chemical laboratories.
  • A degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering with specific coursework in chemistry, mathematics, and physics.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in regulatory compliance within the alcohol and tobacco industries.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).

Responsibilities

  • Perform examinations on samples and/or formulas of regulated commodities using scientifically sound procedures.
  • Provide expert level regulatory interpretation of analytical data.
  • Prepare technical reports, research papers, and position papers with clear recommendations for policy decisions.
  • Guide and implement technical capability enhancement projects across the division.
  • Lead improvements in laboratory data systems and quality/safety programs.
  • Represent the laboratory on scientific and regulatory issues in professional meetings.
