The Chemist II position at Staffing Solutions Organization LLC (SSO) in Augusta, Maine, is a critical role that provides technical assistance in environmental analytical chemistry to the Maine CDC toxicologists and the Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry (DACF) PFAS Response Program. This position is focused on the evaluation of laboratory results from testing various agricultural food commodities and livestock tissues for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The Chemist II will conduct formal reviews of analytical laboratory data reports, assess current laboratory methods for PFAS analysis, and assist in the design, conduct, and interpretation of interlaboratory studies of PFAS testing across selected media such as milk, bovine serum, muscle tissue, and eggs. In addition to the review and evaluation tasks, the Chemist II will be trained to analyze agricultural food commodities and livestock tissues for PFAS using state-of-the-art methods and instrumentation. This role will also provide backup support to the Maine Health and Environmental Testing Laboratory, ensuring that the laboratory maintains its operational capacity. The position requires a strong foundation in chemistry and instrumental analyses, as well as the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment. The Chemist II will be expected to follow complicated analytical procedures, troubleshoot issues, and maintain detailed records while writing comprehensive reports on findings. The work schedule for this position is set for 40 hours per week, with normal working hours between 8 am and 5 pm on weekdays. The role allows for remote work up to three days per week, with two days required at the Maine CDC offices in Augusta, ME, depending on departmental needs and supervisor discretion.
