About The Position

The Chemical Technician at Southern Company is responsible for performing technical and analytical services essential to the operation of a fossil fuel power plant. This role focuses on ensuring the safety and efficiency of plant operations through chemical protection, compliance with environmental regulations, and maintenance of water treatment processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline with a minimum of 12 semester hours of chemistry.
  • Experience in large water treatment facilities, including operating and maintaining clarification, filtration, reverse osmosis, and de-ionization systems.
  • Knowledge of proper analytical methods and techniques.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical systems and read schematic diagrams.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in a power plant environment.
  • High level of knowledge of chemical treatment methods and operation of water treatment plants.
  • Ability to work in non-temperature-controlled environments.

Responsibilities

  • Perform technical and analytical services essential to the operation of a fossil fuel power plant.
  • Provide chemical protection of steam generating equipment to minimize outages due to corrosion and deposits.
  • Minimize loss of efficiency and possible replacement of water treatment and mechanical components.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with environmental, safety, and health regulations.
  • Operate and maintain water treatment plant for production of de-ionized/ultra-pure water.
  • Conduct sampling of water, boiler/turbine cleaning samples, oil, coal ash, and metal deposits.
  • Perform analytical testing and monitor plant effluents.
  • Calibrate and maintain laboratory and on-line equipment and instrumentation.
  • Maintain bulk chemical and laboratory supplies inventory.
  • Generate water quality reports and collect regulatory water samples.
