About The Position

The Environmental Health and Safety office is seeking a Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) to manage a comprehensive campus-wide chemical safety program for the University of Iowa. The CHO will provide consultation and training to chemical users for the safe use, storage, transportation, and disposal of chemicals; assist departments and units possessing chemicals with emergency preparedness planning; conduct site inspections and audits of areas possessing and disposing of chemicals. This position reports to the Director of Environmental and Safety Office within the University of Iowa. Work Modality: Hybrid, within Iowa. About Pay and Compensation: Pay Grade: 6A Qualifications: Education or Equivalency Required: A master’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or industrial hygiene or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Requirements

  • Demonstrate minimally 3 years experience with exposure monitoring using a variety of sampling equipment, conducting health hazard evaluations and recommending control measures.
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of protective equipment and systems including engineering controls when handling chemicals.
  • Demonstrate 3-5 years experience in supervising and coordinating the work of others involved in health and safety activities, including direct supervision of professional staff.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of air sampling methodologies, equipment, exposure criteria, and calibration procedures.
  • Demonstrate extensive skill managing multiple tasks that require accuracy, detail-level attention and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of OSHA standards, chemical hazard recognition.
  • Demonstrate extensive proficiency with Microsoft Office software, (especially excel and access, and including outlook, teams, word, powerpoint, etc.).
  • Demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship management skills.
  • Demonstrate job-related experience with fostering a welcoming and respectful work environment and/or otherwise demonstrate their ability to foster a welcoming and respectful work environment for people from all types of backgrounds and viewpoints.
  • Possession of a valid state or commercial driver's license, and the ability to meet University Fleet Safety Standards.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering or industrial hygiene or an equivalent combination of education and experience is highly preferred.
  • Prefer 5-7 years experience with exposure monitoring using a variety of sampling equipment, conducting health hazard evaluations and recommending control measures.
  • Experience and knowledge of laboratory and research use of chemicals and experimental procedures.
  • Certification as a Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHHO) from the National Registry of Certified Chemists (NRCC).
  • Certified Industrial Hygiene certification
