About The Position

The Summer Day Camp Counselor position at the YMCA of Greater Omaha is a seasonal role focused on supporting youth development and community engagement. Counselors create nurturing relationships with children, facilitate peer connections, and assist in planning and implementing culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate activities. This role emphasizes safety, communication, and adherence to YMCA values while providing a positive camp experience for all participants.

Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Previous experience working with children aged 4-12 years, preferably in a day camp setting.
  • Ability to supervise and play with children in a pool setting required.
  • Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor living, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games or art.
  • Demonstrated leadership, dependability & flexibility in work hours.
  • Ability to work independently with attention to detail required.
  • Complete before first shift: program-specific training.
  • Complete within 30 days of hire: YMCA cause & culture training; Child Abuse Prevention Training, BLS CPR/AED/First Aid.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community and successful clearance of background check.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises assigned group of children.
  • Supports SDC Director/Manager in planning and implementation of program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
  • Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness.
  • Actively participates in department and branch staff meetings and trainings.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
  • Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents, children and other staff.
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
