The charge nurse assists the Clinical Manager and/or Nursing Director with the management of the unit including participating in employee evaluation, staffing and scheduling, patient and preceptor assignments, oversight of resource utilization, and initiating and overseeing quality improvement activities. The charge nurse acts as a resource and provides information/education to unit staff. The charge nurse is involved in service recovery, promoting customer service to both internal and external customers. The charge nurse is a role model and proponent of the professional nurse as exemplified by their presence on the unit, participation in nursing department initiatives such as the acquisition of Magnet Certification, and organizational committee meetings. Delegates workload appropriately and fairly to meet the needs of the patient. Efficiently and effectively monitors supply use to meet patient needs. Identifies personal goals and action plans to meet the unit and organizational goals. Is required to provide direct patient care as needed, balancing patient care with charge nurse duties. Assigns patients and tasks according to staff expertise and patient acuity, and assumes responsibility for functioning of the unit on a shift to shift basis. Maintains open communication with all health care team members, nursing leadership, and medical staff. especially with Nursing Directors, Clinical Managers and other Charge Nurses. Conducts or participates in unit meetings, committee meetings, and facilitates active participation of staff members. Serves as a role model for staff regarding positive customer relations. Monitors unit customer service, and intervenes as necessary. Rounds on internal and external customers based on unit requirements. Participates in employee evaluations, performs E-S-L conversations with employees, counsels and coaches employees when necessary, and implements disciplinary process according to policy including time and attendance issues. Maintains anecdotal documentation. Collaborates and contributes to revision of policies and procedures. Counsels staff and serves as a role model to maintain and adhere to all department and facility policies. Participates in the review and investigation of occurrence reports; intervenes and develops action plans for actual events and near misses and shares the results with staff. Knowledgeable of regulatory standards; assists in adhering to these standards and ensuring staff compliance. Participates in quality improvement by identifying, in collaboration with nursing associates, 2-3 quality improvement initiatives annually. May be responsible for meeting unit audit requirements. Participates in assessing and cost-effectively meeting staffing needs and resource utilization within the budget of the department on the unit, taking into account patient status, personnel available, and makes assignments accordingly. Confers with unit nursing leadership when making preceptor/nurse assignments. Acts as a clinical resource and may assist with education and dispensement of education, in service educator for staff as needed. Participates in the annual charge nurse competency initiative. Requirements

  • ADN or BSN required.
  • Licensed as an RN with privileges in Kentucky.
