About The Position

The position involves assisting in interviewing and selecting staff for the patient care unit, providing leadership and direction in accordance with organizational goals, and communicating with the Manager regarding issues and positive situations from each shift. The role includes supervising professional and technical unit staff, determining staffing mix based on budgeted hours and patient acuity, and overseeing the maintenance of supplies necessary for nursing care. The position also requires collaboration with ancillary support services to ensure a safe and secure environment for patients and staff, maintaining budgetary limits, and promoting open communication across shifts and departments. Additionally, the role involves evaluating patient care, advocating for patients, and participating in the education of patients and nursing students. The candidate must adhere to hospital policies and procedures and support the mission and values of Johnson Memorial Health.

Requirements

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Indiana required.
  • BSN required.
  • Must maintain current BLS or CPR for Healthcare Providers certification.
  • One year of experience in critical care nursing required for Critical Care Unit.
  • ACLS or ALS certification required for Critical Care Unit.
  • One year of experience in emergency or critical care nursing required for Emergency Department.
  • Must obtain ACLS or ALS within six months of hire for Emergency Department.
  • Must complete Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC), Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification within one year of hire for Emergency Department.
  • One year of experience in maternal-child nursing required for Maternity Center.
  • NPR certification required for Maternity Center.
  • One year of experience in Med/Surg or related acute care nursing required for Med/Surg Unit.

Nice To Haves

  • First line management experience preferred.
  • CEN preferred for Emergency Department.
  • Specialty certification preferred for Maternity Center.
  • PALS certification preferred for Med/Surg Unit.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in interviewing and selecting staff for patient care unit.
  • Works with Manager in providing leadership and direction in accordance with organizational departmental goals and objectives.
  • Communicates with Manager regarding issues/challenges and positive situations from each shift.
  • Assists with professional growth and development of staff.
  • Participates in completion of performance evaluation of staff.
  • Assists Manager in counseling employees, developing staff, and utilizing disciplinary process.
  • Supervises professional and/or technical unit staff and student nurses on shift.
  • Determines staffing mix and amount based on budgeted hours and patient acuity.
  • Assigns duties based on patient unit needs and individual expertise of staff members.
  • Oversees maintenance of supplies necessary for providing emergency and routine nursing care.
  • Collaborates with ancillary support services to provide a safe, comfortable, clean, and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Assists in maintaining budgetary limits in both operating expense and FTE by utilizing resources appropriately.
  • Promotes open communication and continuity of care between shifts, floors, physicians/providers and departments.
  • Adheres to and provides assistance in orientation to and practice of emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation procedures, and internal/external disaster plans.
  • Provides input in formulating patient care policy and procedures and standards of care for patient care services.
  • Evaluates patient care through assessment, planning, intervention, re-evaluation, written documentation, observation, and comparison to established standards.
  • Administers nursing care to patients as needed to maintain clinical skills.
  • Assumes role of patient advocate respecting guidelines found in Patient Bill of Rights.
  • Communicates with patient, significant others, and health professionals regarding care for patient.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient record and patient, physician, staff, or other healthcare provider information.
  • Participates in and provides direction for teaching of patients and significant others.
  • Cooperates with clinical instructors in planning, implementing, and evaluating students’ clinical experience.
  • Assumes responsibility for own personal continuing education and developmental needs.
  • Serves on committees in patient care/nursing, hospital-wide or professional nursing organizations.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.

  • Conducts all activities in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, and hospital policies and procedures.
