The position is responsible for the oversight of patient care for the assigned department/unit. The individual coordinates the clinical care of all patients located on the unit, ensuring cohesive delivery of services, patient satisfaction, and safety. The role includes supervising staff on nursing units in the absence of the Unit Director/Coordinator to assure that nursing standards and quality initiatives are met. The individual will also provide feedback to department leadership for performance improvement.

  • Validates staffing needs with the Administrative Nursing Supervisor based on the unit's staffing plan and patient care needs.
  • Completes patient assignments each shift based on acuity and staff skills.
  • Assesses all reported changes in status for appropriateness of assignment and placement.
  • Monitors staff competency and patient acuity to ensure patient safety.
  • Collaborates with Administrative Nursing Supervisor/Bed Control for proper patient placement.
  • Communicates patient discharge planning needs with department case manager, social worker, and other disciplines.
  • Facilitates timely patient admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  • Rounds on patients to ensure satisfaction of patient experience.
  • Monitors desk for new patient orders and timely transcription/processing.
  • Ensures compliance for performance and documentation with core measures.
  • Welcomes float/agency staff and ensures they are comfortable with department, patient assignment and equipment use.
  • Documents all care delivered and reassessments completed.
  • Monitors meal periods and breaks to ensure adequate staffing at all times.
  • Promotes positive relationships with unit staff and ancillary departments.
  • 18 months of LPN experience with 6 months of RN experience and successful completion of preceptor course within 12 months OR 1 year of RN experience with successful completion of preceptor course within 12 months.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and possess current registration with the Louisiana State Board of Nursing.
  • 2 years of experience preferred.
