About The Position

Founded in 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) is the oldest conservation and recreation organization in the United States. Our mission is simple yet powerful: foster protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the outdoors. With a focus on protecting mountains, forests, waters, and trails throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, we envision a world where our natural resources are healthy, loved, and always protected, and where the outdoors occupies a place of central importance in every person’s life. This position aligns both paid and unpaid staff to move AMC’s mission and four strategic priorities: Inspire joyous, meaningful outdoor experiences Protect critical landscapes for the well-being of people and the outdoors Cultivate and sustain a robust, diverse, and welcoming community Foster access to the outdoors The Manager leads AMC’s efforts to create welcoming, engaging, and joyful experiences across Chapters while cultivating clear and accessible pathways for volunteering. Reporting to the Director of Volunteer Engagement, this role partners closely with Chapter leaders and staff across the organization to recruit and recognize volunteers, build consistent practices, and support high-quality, mission-aligned event execution. This role serves as both a strategic partner and on-the-ground operator, regularly engaging with Chapters through virtual and in-person events, trainings, and meetings to build trust, support execution, and ensure volunteers and leaders feel confident and supported in their roles. Through strong relationship-building, targeted outreach, and data-informed decision-making, the Manager gathers feedback from volunteers and staff, identifies patterns and opportunities, and works cross-functionally to continuously improve engagement, retention, and pathways into leadership. Location is flexible within the AMC footprint, with periodic travel across the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic for chapter and staff engagements (meetings, trainings, and site visits). Schedule flexes to meet volunteer needs, with significant evening and weekend work offset by adjusted weekday hours.
