About The Position

Chaplain Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties employees perform in the class. Specifications do not reflect all duties performed within the job. Position Overview : This classification aims to assess inmates' and families' spiritual needs and assist families in using their faith to deal with illness, trauma, and stress. It also visits new inmates and inmates with special requests in the assigned area and follows up with inmates from previous visits when appropriate.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED is supplemented by at least two years as a lay chaplain.
  • Requires the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data.
  • Requires the ability to apply principles of persuasion and/or influence.
  • Requires the ability to operate, maneuver, and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Requires utilizing various reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.
  • Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.
  • Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
  • Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in situations involving evaluating information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
  • Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work. They typically involve some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).
  • Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals, and some require the ability to communicate orally.
  • Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Provides crisis intervention as necessary; assists in helping families remain informed of inmates’ condition.
  • Documents the inmate and family service provided
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide a safe environment and communicate effectively with all age groups of inmates.
  • Provide pastoral services in such a way as to accomplish institutional and departmental objectives—functions in such a manner that reflects the mission and vision of the institution.
  • Adheres to all Prison standards, policies, and procedures
  • Adheres to the code of ethics of the Association of Professional Chaplains
  • Assists other employees or departments as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
